Welcome to the New Fresh Start for Hens Website

Fresh Start for Hens new website celebration

The bottom line: We're absolutely delighted to welcome you to our brand new website. This has been a labour of love, years in the making, and we couldn't be more excited to finally share it with you. Come explore, and please let us know if you spot anything that needs fixing!

A Long Time Coming

If we're being completely honest, this website has been "nearly finished" for what feels like forever. We've lost count of how many times we've said "it'll be ready next month" over the past few years.

But here we are. Finally. And we think it's been worth the wait.

Our old website served us well, but it was time for something that truly reflected who we are and, more importantly, made life easier for you. Whether you're just discovering rescue hen keeping, preparing to adopt your first girls, or you're an experienced keeper looking for specific advice, we wanted to create a space that welcomes you and helps you find exactly what you need.

What's New?

A Fresh Look

You'll notice we've given everything a good spruce up. The design is cleaner, more modern, and hopefully much easier to navigate. We wanted the website to feel as warm and welcoming as the community itself.

Comprehensive Guides

We've created an entire library of in-depth articles covering everything from your first steps in rescue hen keeping to advanced topics for experienced keepers. These guides represent years of collective knowledge from our community, volunteers, and the thousands of hens we've helped rehome.

Whether you're wondering what to expect in your first 30 days, how to prepare your garden, or how to keep your girls healthy through winter, we've got you covered with detailed, practical advice written by people who genuinely know their stuff.

Easier Adoption Process

Registering your interest in adopting rescue hens is now simpler than ever. We've streamlined the entire process to get you from "I'm thinking about it" to "When can I collect them?" as smoothly as possible.

Community Connection

Rescue hen keeping is so much better when you're connected with others on the same journey. We've made it easier to find your local community, join discussions, and share your own rescue hen stories.

Mobile Friendly

Because let's face it, most of you will be checking the website whilst standing in your garden watching your hens and wondering "Is that normal?" Yes, it probably is. And now you can find out without having to trudge back inside to your computer.

New website features and sections

Our Favourite New Features

The Complete Adoption Guide

We've put together the most comprehensive guide to adopting ex-battery hens you'll find anywhere. From understanding what rescue hens are to preparing your garden, from the first 30 days to long-term care, it's all there in one place.

Health and Care Library

Worried about bumblefoot? Wondering if that's normal moulting or something more serious? Our health section breaks down common issues in plain English, helping you understand when to monitor and when to call the vet.

Seasonal Advice

Hen keeping changes with the seasons, and we've created guides specific to each time of year. Our winter care article alone has everything you need to keep your girls cosy through the cold months.

Real Stories

Some of our favourite content is the real stories from real keepers. The triumphs, the challenges, the moments that made you laugh until you cried. These stories remind us why we do what we do.

We Need Your Help

Here's the thing about launching a new website: despite all the testing, checking, and rechecking, something always sneaks through. A link that doesn't quite work. A page that looks odd on certain devices. A typo that somehow survived multiple proofreads.

This is where you come in.

If You Spot Something

Please, please let us know. We want this website to be brilliant, and we can't do that without your eyes on it. If you encounter any issues, no matter how small:

  • Drop us an email: [INSERT EMAIL ADDRESS HERE]

  • Use the contact form: There's one on every page (very convenient, that)

  • Message us on social media: We're active and responsive

  • Let the team know at collection events: Our volunteers love hearing feedback

Honestly, we won't be offended. We'll be grateful. Every issue you report helps us make the website better for everyone.

What Counts as an Issue?

If you're wondering whether something's worth reporting, the answer is probably yes. But specifically:

  • Links that don't work or go to the wrong place

  • Pages that look strange on your device

  • Forms that won't submit

  • Images that won't load

  • Text that's hard to read

  • Information that seems incorrect or outdated

  • Anything that just feels "off"

When you report an issue, it helps if you can tell us:

  • Which page you were on (copy the web address if you can)

  • What device you're using (phone, tablet, computer)

  • What happened vs what you expected to happen

But don't worry if you can't provide all that. "The adoption page looks weird on my phone" is still helpful!

Team welcoming feedback and suggestions

What We'd Love to Hear

Beyond bug reports, we'd genuinely love your feedback on the website itself:

  • Is it easy to find what you need? If you were hunting for something and couldn't find it, that's valuable information.

  • Is the content helpful? Are our guides actually useful, or are we missing something important?

  • What would make it better? We're always thinking about improvements, and your ideas might spark something brilliant.

  • What do you love? Positive feedback keeps us going! If something made your hen keeping life easier, we want to know.

A Huge Thank You

This website exists because of our incredible community. The volunteers who give their time, the keepers who share their knowledge, the adopters who open their homes and hearts to rescue hens, and the supporters who make it all possible.

Every hen we've rehomed, every successful adoption, every transformation we've witnessed has brought us to this point. This website is for you and because of you.

What Hasn't Changed

Whilst the website is new, our mission remains exactly the same: giving ex-commercial hens the retirement they deserve.

We're still the same team, still working with the same farms, still committed to the same welfare standards, and still absolutely devoted to these remarkable birds.

The website is just a tool to help us do that work better.

Rescue hens thriving, mission continuing

Explore and Enjoy

We hope you'll take some time to explore the new website. Read the guides, browse the stories, and discover resources you might not have known existed.

If you're new here, welcome! You've found a community of people who understand the joy of rescue hen keeping and the satisfaction of giving vulnerable creatures a second chance.

If you've been with us for years, thank you for your patience whilst we've built this. We hope you'll find it was worth the wait.

Start Here

Not sure where to begin? Here are our most popular sections:

Coming Soon

We're not finished yet! Over the coming months, we'll be adding:

  • Video guides for visual learners

  • Interactive troubleshooting tools

  • Expanded community forums

  • Monthly newsletter (if you'd like to subscribe)

  • Resource downloads (checklists, care calendars, etc.)

  • Local keeper networks and meetups

If there's something specific you'd love to see, let us know. We're building this for you, so your input genuinely shapes what we create.

The website is just one way we connect with our community. You'll also find us:

  • Facebook: Daily updates and community chat

  • Instagram: Beautiful hen photos (mostly yours!)

A Personal Note

From everyone involved in creating this website: thank you for being here.

Whether you've adopted one hen or twenty, whether you're still considering it or you're years into your hen keeping journey, you're part of something special.

Every hen who finds a home through Fresh Start for Hens gets to experience grass, sunshine, dust baths, and genuine care. That only happens because of people like you.

This website is here to support you in that incredible work.

One More Thing

If you're reading this on launch day (or week, or month), thank you for your patience if things are a bit wonky. New websites are like rescue hens in their first week: they need a bit of time to settle in, find their feet, and figure out how everything works.

We'll get there together.

Welcoming diverse community of hen keepers

Right Then

Enough from us. Go explore the website, find something useful, and don't forget to let us know what you think.

And if you've been thinking about adopting rescue hens but haven't quite taken the leap yet? There's never been a better time. We've got all the information you need, a supportive community waiting to welcome you, and some very deserving hens who'd love to meet you.

Welcome to the new Fresh Start for Hens. We're so glad you're here.
